Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course will explore the various ways in which knowledge production participates in the politics of climate change, and how climate change challenges and transforms the relations between science, politics and the economy. Climate science has been central in the formulation of climate change as a global problem. But climate science is also very diverse in terms of disciplines, tools, methods, objects and forms of expertise, because climate change is as much a geophysical, an ecosystemic, and a socio-economic issue. This course aims to unpack this diversity in order to understand how and where the various fields of climate science interact and mingle, and with what concrete consequences. To do so we will take a variety of entry points. First, we will look at institutional interfaces between scientific disciplineandbetween science and politics, such as the IPCC or the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA). We will also consider research objects that travel and link between disciplines, such as carbon and emissions scenarios. Last, we will study controversies and frictions on how to approach climate change, such as the different versions of the economics of climate change, or the debates on how to consider the role of technology and innovation in climate action.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

To pass the seminar, students are expected to complete the following tasks:
Participation: Students are required to participate actively in the discussions. which implies reading the seminar literature prior to each seminar session.
To ensure productive discussions, each student will prepare a note on the readings for at least one of the sessions. The note should include a synthesis of the arguments of the texts, a discussion of how they relate to the session theme and to previous classes, as well as questions to trigger class discussions. The students who have prepared notes will lead the class discussion for this session; they can prepare individually or as a group. Topics will be distributed among students in the first session. The notes are for students’ personal use and do not need to be submitted.
Group presentations: In the last session, students will prepare a presentation that discusses a climate science article in light of the themes explored in the course (see session description below). The exact timing and duration of the presentation will depend on the total number of students in the class and will be confirmed in the first session.
Seminar paper: Students will write a 3,000-word paper that critically investigates the entanglements between science, politics and the economy on the basis of a selected empirical case (e.g. news item, climate science or politics venue, scientific proposal…). The paper should relate to the literature, themes and concepts explored throughout the course. The papers must include a full set of references in a consistent reference style. Papers should be submitted via Moodle and email (beatrice.cointe@minesparis.psl.eu) by midnight on July 8th.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The grading scheme is based on a total of 100 points. These points will be awarded in relation to students’ performance in meeting the course learning aims in the different obligatory tasks.
The maximum number of points to be acquired for each task is:
Participation, 20 points, assessed individually, feedback on request
Reading note, 20 points, assessed individually or as group work, feedback on request
Oral presentation, 20 points, assessed as group work, feedback on request
Seminar paper, 40 points, assessed individually, feedback on request

A minimum of 50 points is necessary to successfully complete the course. Failure to meet the attendance regulations, to deliver course assignments on time or to adhere to standards of academic work may result in a deduction of points.

Grades
100-89 points Excellent (1)
88-76 points Good (2)
75-63 points Satisfactory (3)
62-50 points Sufficient (4)
49-0 points Unsatisfactory (5) (fail)

Attendance
Please note: If you miss the first session of the course unexcused, you will be automatically de-registered.
Presence and participation is compulsory. The course takes place in person. Only in exceptional cases online participation is possible (e.g. in case of positive Covid test results). This must be discussed with the lecturer in advance. In any case, online participation also means that it is the student's responsibility to actively participate in the course.
Absences of four hours at maximum are tolerated, provided that the lecturer is informed about the absence. Absences of up to eight hours in total may be compensated by either a deduction of grading points or/and extra work agreed with the lecturer. Whether compensation is possible is decided by the lecturer.
Absences of more than eight hours in total cannot be compensated. In this case, or if the lecturer does not allow a student to compensate absences of more than four hours, the course cannot be completed and is graded as a ‘fail’ (5), unless there is a major and unpredictable reason for not being able to fulfill the attendance requirements on the student’s side (e.g. a longer illness). In such a case, the student may be de-registered from the course without grading. It is the student’s responsibility to communicate this in a timely manner, and to provide relevant evidence to their claims if necessary. Whether this exception applies is decided by the lecturer.

Important Grading Information
If not explicitly noted otherwise, all requirements mentioned in the grading scheme and the attendance regulations must be met. If a required task is not fulfilled, e.g. a required assignment is not handed in or if the student does not meet the attendance requirements, this will be considered as a discontinuation of the course. In that case, the course will be graded as ‘fail’ (5), unless there is a major and unpredictable reason for not being able to fulfill the task on the student's side (e.g. a longer illness). In such a case, the student may be de-registered from the course without grading. It is the student’s responsibility to communicate this in a timely manner, and to provide relevant evidence to their claims if necessary. Whether this exception applies is decided by the lecturer.
If any requirement of the course has been fulfilled by fraudulent means, be it for example by cheating at an exam, plagiarizing parts of a written assignment or by faking signatures on an attendance sheet, the student's participation in the course will be discontinued, the entire course will be graded as ‘not assessed’ and will be entered into the electronic exam record as ‘fraudulently obtained’. Self-plagiarism, particularly re-using own work handed in for other courses, will be treated likewise.

This course uses the plagiarism-detection service Turnitin for larger assignments.
