Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

In this course, students will learn how to plan and conduct a quantitative research project. The major aim of this course is to apply learned knowledge about demographic methods and scientific working to practice by conducting a small empirical study about a topic of choice. The course also aims at preparing the students for writing their Master's Thesis.

The first three sessions are dedicated to the following topics:
- Research project design
- Critical evaluation of existing data
- Reproducibility and open science practices
During these sessions, students also start exploring the theme they would like to research.

In the second part of the course, students are expected to conduct their own research project. Support will be given by the lecturers in the form of individual and group coaching.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

The performance components consist of (i) active class participation, (ii) an interim presentation of students' own research project and (iii) a scientific poster presentation of the final results.

(i) Active class participation (20%): Students are asked to actively participate in class and prepare take-home assignments. Moreover, they are expected to show up prepared at the coaching sessions to discuss the progress of their research projects and to provide peer feedback to their colleagues.
(ii) Interim presentation (30%)
(iii) Scientific poster presentation (50%)

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

For a successful completion of the course, all performance components must be delivered on time and passed individually (at least 60% per performance component). The final grade will be determined as follows:

100%-91%: Excellent (1)
90%-81%: Good (2)
80%-71%: Satisfactory (3)
70%-60%: Sufficient (4)
< 60%: Unsatisfactory (5)

Attendance is compulsory; one absence will be excused if the lecturers are informed beforehand.
