Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

- A brief history of population-related policies in the areas of mortality/health, fertility and international migration;
- International conventions and the sequence of international population conferences in the second half of the 20th century
- Criticisms and new approaches to population policies, including the fundamental paradigm shift from population control to human rights and reproductive health that took place around the 1994 World Population Conference in Cairo;
- The evolution of European migration policies and the current state of play in addressing the policy challenges associated with depopulation and ageing in Europe;
- Specific policies, including country examples, in the three areas of mortality/health, fertility and international migration;
- The importance of measurement and the provision of accurate figures to accompany the design and evaluation of population policies.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

The assessment will be in the form of a final exam in which students will be asked to write short essays on topics covered in the lecture.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

In the exam students must show their knowledge of the topics covered as well as their independent critical analysis of them. There will be a strict check for plagiarism.
a) Maximum number of points that can be achieved: 100
b) Minimum requirement for a positive result: 50 points
c) Scale of marks:
89 - 100.....points Grade 1
76 - 88.......points Grade 2
63 - 75.......points Grade 3
50 - 62.......points Grade 4
Under 50 points Grade 5

Prüfungsstoff

The topics covered in the lecture (see above) will also be the examination topics.
