Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The reading of scientific literature is one of the main tasks in the studies of Social and Cultural Anthropology. The ability to understand and interpret academic readings is a core skill that has to be learned. In the seminar lessons, the students will acquire some of the basic techniques of academic reading that include to work out the leading question, the method, the arguments, and the conclusion. Furthermore, some of the important texts in the history of anthropology will be treated in their respective contexts. The seminar shall also provide an introduction to some of the central ideas, methods, and debates that make up the anthropological discipline.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Reading and course attendance; seminar and discussion participation; small exercises; final paper (1500-3000 word essay).

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The students will be taught to handle and analyze scientific readings. They will learn and practice basic techniques of academic reading by means of some of the most important literature in the history of Anthropology.

Prüfungsstoff

The students will acquire the basic techniques of scientific reading by means of core readings in Social and Cultural Anthropology. Students will be assisted in their analysis, interpretation and discussion of the requested reading.
