Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
This course will use different approaches: inputs by the lecturer, collective readings and discussions of key texts and other materials (e.g. videos) in class, short presentation of students on specific topics.English will be used as means of communication
Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel
Requirements/ Leistungsnachweis, Prüfungsmodalitäten:
* attendance in 80% of all courses (up to 3 units à 2 hours may be missed)
* active participation in course discussions
* preparation of brief summaries of obligatory reading material (approx. 400 words each, English or German)
* on time submission of summaries of obligatory reading material (for specific dates of submission see extra handout to be distributed after first session)
* preparation of handout for own presentation (1 to 2 pages)
* circulation of handout of own presentation to all course participants including instructor; handout has to be sent 48 hours before the respective presentation
* submission of written paper via the KSA Info-Center only
Paper either in English or German - should cover approx. 4000 words without bibliography (that is approx.12 pages in 12 fonds, one spaced)
Word count has to be written on front page of paper.
Papers that are substantially longer than the 4000 word will not be accepted
Final deadline for paper submission will be February 28th, 2016. No extension will be granted!!!!Information on Grading:

Sehr gut 100 % to 91 % of possible points
Gut 90 % to 76 % of possible points

This course will focus on the collaboration of social scientists in general and anthropologists in particular with the military, security and intelligence organizations. Covering the period from colonial empires to the current global war on terror the use of anthropological expertise (e.g. embedded anthropologists in the US army´s Humain Terrain System in Iraq and Afghanistan) will be studied. In addition, critical stances on 'militarizing anthropology' by individual anthropologists (e.g. Price, Gonzales) and anthropological associations (AAA, Network of Concerned Anthropologists) will be deal
