In these introductory meetings, I will also give you an overview of the history of resource politics in EU-Africa relations and present several case studies as well as an ongoing research project (Arbitrex).
At the latest in May, we will start to develop research designs based on specific research questions. The endresult of this course in June should be such a research design. It will be possible to work in groups.Basic knowledge of political economy is recommended (e.g.: What is a bilateral investment treaty? What is direct investment?). The exercises will focus on quantitative methods (mostly data bases and excel), but research designs may include qualitative approaches. The second part of this FOSE should entirely focus on empirical research. In exceptional cases, it will also be possible to focus on topics that have nothing to do with the overall theme of the seminar.
