Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The course will deliver a broad overview about the contemporary international debates in peace and conflict studies and the currently dominant narratives in peacebuilding policy. After successfully completing the course, students are able to critically reflect key documents on conflict, peace and development, locate them within the ongoing debate and evaluate their relevance in development policy in general.

The course has three parts, each consisting of several modules:
1 - overview about the contemporary debates in peace and conflict studies with an emphasis on conflict analysis after the so-called 'local turn'.
2 - discussion of the development policy approaches towards violent conflict and fragility, particularly sustainable and inclusive peace (World Bank, United Nations) and the nexus-approach in the framework of the so-called 'new deal on peacebuilding and statebuilding' (OECD/INCAF, g7+).
3 - exploration of possible alternative approaches in peacebuilding: pragmatic peace, resilience, political settlements, local peace formation

Methods: debates of key articles and documents, group presentations, simulation exercise
