Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

At the same time as anthropology moves away from essentializing notions such as "culture" or "ethnicity", indigenous and other marginalized groups discover them as tools, weapons, and commodities. The course will explore these uses of "culture" and related notions. The title of the course is a reference to a Comaroffs' "Ethnicity, Inc.," which will serve as a starting point for discussions.

Written term paper; oral presentations of articles and/or discussion leadership; critical book review; participation.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The intention is to provide a comprehensive overview and critical discussion of the subject matter. A written seminar paper will be the tangible result of the course.
