Course description:Pre-requisites: Basic knowledge in Gender Anthropology/Gender Studies is expected! This seminar deals with 'masculinity' and its manifold variants which are performed in the course of contemporary global processes. By way of cultural and social comparison we will consider the multi-faceted range of 'making manhood' and 'doing gender' through performance and ritualisation on a local and global scale. Acknowledging that there is no stable and single masculinity and that masculinities need to be constantly negotiated we will focus particularly on experiences of crises of 'manhood' and how such crises are controlled by individuals, groups, and institutions. Not less important, we will further question whether such crises lead to a transformation or the re-establishment of a certain idea of manhood and a specific variant of masculinity. In doing so, we will explore in a critical way the mutual dynamics between gender (relations), performance, and globalization.
