Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Visual research methods have long been important in ethnography, even if mostly secondary to the classical methods of participant observation. If anything, this importance has increased in recent decades. Nevertheless, the use of visual media for research poses many critical questions of method and representation, questions which moreover interfere with the rapidly changing socio-cultural role and availability of images.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Course attendance, active participation in discussions and practical work, and carrying out of a self-defined small research project are required.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The course aims at providing students with competence and hands-on experience in the use of visual ethnographic methods.

Prüfungsstoff

We will discuss various ways of using visual media in ethnographic research. Students will carry out small ethnographic projects in groups according to their interests. They will define a research design and identify and apply appropriate methods. The outcome of this experimental approach will be collectively discussed and evaluated in the course. The projects should be carried out in or near Vienna and be completed by the end of December at the latest.
