Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
People's socialities and subjectivities around the world have been formed and shaped through and as social relationships that transgress national borders since countries and states exist. Yet, with increased globalisation and its specific technologies of mobility and communication such social processes have taken on novel currents and new meanings.Starting from this state of affairs this course looks at socialities and subjectivities as they are shaped by connections between the Philippines and Austria. Within a general thematic frame connecting people across borders students will develop and carry out their own project, either as single researcher or in small research teams. Exemplary thematic fields may include, but are not restricted to, migrant health and care workers, disaster relief, interethnic marriage, medical tourism, or tourism in general. Preference will be given to topics related to the fields of medial anthropology, the anthropology of technology and the anthropology of the body.Ethnographic fieldwork is to be carried out either in both Austria and the Philippines or solely in the Philippines during January 2016.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
In the course of a research project on a given theme and region, students will acquire practical skills in doing empirical anthropological research, in particular the development and implementation of ethnographic fieldwork. Particular emphasis is given to the analysis of ethnographic data. Students may further pursue the topic selected for their research project in their master thesis.
Prüfungsstoff
As individual researchers or in small teams students will actively engage in all activities related to anthropological research including doing a literature review, developing a research concept, conducting ethnographic fieldwork, as well as organising and analysing the collected data and writing research reports.
