Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The Seminar will take contemporary Black movements in the USA as a departure point for a historical analysis of the discourse of race. This will include the "Black Lives Matter" initiative, its reflections in contemporary art, particularly in music (Hip Hop etc.). Overall aim is a reconstruction of the racialized and / or racist discourse on race and its reactive treatment by various discourses of Black Nationalism since the early 20th century (and perhaps even before).

Anything within this framework may be proposed in the first two sessions as individual theme. A clear research question should be presented not later than at the second meeting. Methods will be preliminarily literary studies, but interviews (e.g. with artists and/or activists) are most welcome.
