Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Aims
Participants will acquire competences for an anthropological analysis of multiple interconnections between cultural performance, media and identities as part of the construction and enactment of cultural configurations in changing contexts. This seminar can also be used as a preparation for the methods/field seminar 'Ritual and Cultural Performance' (winter term 2018).
Content
Cultural performances comprise a wide range elements that are closely linked to the construction and representation of identities. They also constitute an important feature of global cultural flows, shape processes of cultural transfer and hybridization, and are in turn shaped by them. On the one hand, the seminar will focus on theoretical concepts that help to analyse such cultural practises at the interface of performance, ritual, media, material culture and visual culture in connection with processes of cultural/social transformation, globalisation, post colonialism and transcultural processes. We will investigate case studies in connection with Indian cinema, globalisation and diaspora on the one hand, and the performance of indigeneity on the other hand.
Methods
The seminar will take place in three parts. The first section (March 16) is dedicated to a general introduction to the topic and the structure of the seminar; the second session (April 20/21) will focus on central concepts in connection with media content of related cultural performances as well as on the discussion of texts (in working groups as well as in the plenary); the third section (June 8/9) comprises the discussion of texts and media content in regard to selected fields of research, and the presentation of outlines of the seminar paper.
