Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This seminar explores acts of memory politics and different ‘memory regimes’ supporting national politics as well as individual ways of dealing with the turbulent history that has marked (South)-Eastern Europe and the lives of its people. Rather than treating these two processes separately, the intersections and interlinkages between memory politics and individual memory work are explored in the context of post-socialism and/or war. The transmission and transformation of memories between and across members of different generations who have been exposed to diverse memory politics during their lifetime, is particularly illuminating in this context.

Central themes of the seminar thus are:

Memory politics and (collective) memories in (South-)Eastern Europe
Mnemonic narratives, post-socialism and war
Memory work in times of rapid societal transformations
Historical generations and the transmission of memories
