Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Historical image source research as part of visual anthropology is of central importance in a world that is exposed to a permanent overstimulation of images. How has this developed step by step? Which media have played a role in the past and which are still important today? Within visual anthropology, too, there are various branches that deal with different sub-apertures of the subject. Starting from the historical development of image research in our subject (which in part differs significantly from that in art history), the seminar will focus on its significance for the present and in particular on the popular cultural dimension of image research. The goal is that at the end of the seminar students will have a different, more critical and differentiated view of images than before. The main theories about image interpretation will be discussed as well as the impact of images, the associated interpretive sovereignties and what images can (and should) trigger. Furthermore, the importance of image research for the treatment of current topics will be illuminated.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

1.) Active participation in the seminar;
2.) Presentation and discussion of an object in the context of a short paper;
3.) Submission of a written seminar paper of approx. 8-15 A4 pages.
Details on these three requirements will be given in the seminar.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Prerequisite for a positive grade is a successful short presentation with the presentation, reflection and interpretation of an image/picture, as well as the written elaboration and processing of this image/picture, whereby both a theoretical embedding and reference to methodological approaches must be mentioned.
The evaluation is based on a point system: 16 points are awarded. 0-8 points = insufficient; 9-10 points = sufficient; 11-12 points = satisfactory; 13-14 points = good; 15-16 points = very good.

Prüfungsstoff

Presentations will be given in the seminar. In the course of their reflection and criticism in the plenum, hints for the written elaboration are given, which are topic-related in each case.
On the moodle platform set up for this lecture, pdf's of articles will be made available, as well as the slides of the Power-Point presentations used.
