Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Studying mathematics at university is very challenging, specially since it is very different from high-school and students do not know how to study.
This course is a mixture of learning strategies, experiences from previous students and self-management.

It is mostly aimed at StEOP students (from both the scientific and Lehramt branches), but it can benefit students of any year. The course is practical. After introducing some working methodology in the course we will:
- look at solutions done in the exercise classes at the StEOP,
- prepare future exercises;
- learn structured problem-solving and how to write solutions;
- prepare the next theory class;
- learn to read mathematics and use the lecture notes to study.

There is also an important component on self-management, which will include:
- doing a weekly planner;
- what to do when you fall behind;
- tools for self-reflection;
- dealing with stress.

A part of the theoretical background of this course can be found at
https://sites.google.com/view/mastering-math-and-mind/course-description?authuser=0
and it includes:
1. Mathematics at University: everything is different (video and reading of a personal experience).
2. Basic management
2.1 Time and energy: basic management - video
2.2 Intelligence (and how to increase it or decrease it).
2.3 Mathematical etiquette
3. How to learn maths
3.1 Theory class: how-to
3.2 Reading maths
3.3 Solving exercises
3.4 Writing maths
4. Stress in oral presentations - video
5. Falling behind: the moment of panic
6. Joy: the only success

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Student must accomplish two things to pass the course successfully:
- attendance to class;
- submission of some work, e.g. submit the weekly planner that done during class time or submit an exercise done during the StEOP.
