Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course gives concrete hands-on experience in modern research in (experimental) solid state physics demonstrating currently active projects in the different groups.

Exercise topics will cover a wide range of methods ranging from studies of superconductivity and magnetism to atomic resolution transmission electron microscopy and optical spectroscopy. Both experimental as well as computational projects can be offered.

The specific topics for each semester depend on the participating instructors and available laboratories, but every semester includes experimental setups that present the current world-wide state-of-the-art. The topics are briefly described in the kick-off meeting.

The students will be divided into groups of two, and each group will select two different research topics.

IMPORTANT: The practical and theoretical research taken place duringthis course can be expanded into projects for master's and even PhD theses.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

The course will be graded based on the participation in the practical exercises and the reports describing each experiment.

Before each exercise, short presentations of the related topic will need to be given to demonstrate that the necessary physical principles behind the used methods have been understood by the participating students.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Both students of a group have to be present and have to contribute to the execution of the experiments.

A report will be handed in and it must be clear that the basic physical principles of the experiment were understood. The experimental data must be analyzed and interpreted correctly.

The report must be handed in within two weeks from the end of the practical exercise, unless otherwise agreed with the instructors.

Prüfungsstoff

According to the experiments chosen, the students will receive the topic related information from their tutors. With this, they should build a background on the topic independently, which will have to be reported in the document they will hand in by the end of the course.

The report must provide a clear motivation for the work, briefly summarize the current state-of-the-art based on provided literature, describe the experiments and analysis of the results, and a discussion reflecting on the results and issues encountered during the practical work.

Literatur

The literature will be tailored to the work to be done by each group. According to the experiments chosen, the students will receive the topic related information from their tutors.
