Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Electron microscopy and various types of spectroscopy are indispensable tools for materials physics, chemistry and biology, and their mastery is vital for wide areas of research.

For a deeper understanding of electron microscopy, the course will provide a comprehensive explanation of the physical concepts of image formation at atomic resolution, as well as the interaction of electrons with matter. Complementary to microscopy, a wide variety of spectroscopic techniques are commonplace in materials science. Apart from electron spectroscopies including scanning tunneling spectroscopy, most of these utilize electromagnetic radiation as a probe. The course will introduce the physical principles of its interaction with matter, alongside useful practical considerations for measurement and analysis.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

The course will be assessed by an oral examination with individual time slots on July 27-28 in the office of Prof. Waitz, with an additional day on August 16 for a couple of people not present in July. No materials will be permitted at the examination, and a calculator will not be needed.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Prüfungsstoff

The lectured material in its entirety will be included. The oral examination will focus on assessing the students' understanding of the physical principles and phenomena behind both microscopy and spectroscopy. Instead of derivations of complex formulas, more important is to understand and explain what is being described, and how this can be used for studying the properties of materials.
