Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The study of the interface between gravity and quantum physics addresses one of the great open questions in physics and has recently (re)awakened the interest of many experimental and theoretical research groups around the world.

This summer school is aimed at master students and young PhD students who want to familiarize themselves with the current state and challenges of this fascinating field of research. The school will provide a broad theoretical and experimental overview and aims to familiarize participants with the various mathematical and philosophical ideas that arise at the intersection of these two pillars of modern science from different angles.

The summer school includes introductory courses and tutorial sessions on quantum information and general relativity with a focus on key concepts such as quantum entanglement and time dilation. It also includes lectures on various experimental techniques applied in regimes where the two theories overlap and gives an outlook on physics beyond the Standard Model. All lectures are given by internationally recognized experts in their respective fields.

The school is also open to international students. External students who want to get credits for this course find the relevant information under https://studieren.univie.ac.at/en/admission/co-registration/.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Participation in the lectures and the two included exercise classes is mandatory.
Grades are based on a paper that participants must write after the school concluded, in which they answer pre-selected questions covered in the lectures and communicated at the beginning of the school.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Participation in the lectures and reaching at least 50% of all points for the paper are required for a positive evaluation.
50%-62%: Genügend
63%-75%: Befriedigend
76%-87%: Gut
88%-100%: Sehr Gut

Prüfungsstoff

Selected topics in Quantum Information, General Relativity and selected experimental techniques (matter wave interferometry, optical interferometry and optomechanics) applied to study their interface that are covered in the lectures.

Literatur

Lecture slides and relevant literature will be provided by the lecturers during or after their presentations.
