Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The aim of the course is to provide insight into state-of-the-art topics of non-equilibrium thermodynamics and its underlying principles.
Specific examples include
- how the fundamental link between information and thermodynamics relates to the operation of memories
-how a single particle undergoing Brownian motion can be used to explore fundamental limits of operating engines in the classical and quantum regime
- how we can get a deeper understanding of the meaning of the 2nd law and the thermodynamic arrow of time.
Each student will, with the help of a supervisor, prepare an oral presentation on a specific topic. In addition, students will be provided questions and literature to prepare for a moderated debate on deeper topics within the seminar.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

1) Oral presentation of selected topic in the seminar (after supervised preparation).
2) Report (about 3 pages) on a monitored discussion session.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Minimum requirements are the oral presentation, the report and presence in the course (max. 2 times missing).
The grade for the presentation will be based on the independence in preparation of the topic and quality of the presentation.
The grade for the report is based on the scientific quality and quality of presentation.

Prüfungsstoff

Individual topics chosen for the respective oral presentation. The content of all presentations and some additional introductory literature will be needed for the monitored discussions and thus the written reports.

Literatur

Literature will be provided in the seminar course (during initial topics selection).
