Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The concept of energy and its conservation is essential to the understanding and operation of the universe and certainly should be dated first in the development of physics teaching. Unfortunately, by historical tradition, the concept of velocity is used as the basis of understanding basic physics.
In this course basic physics will be built up from the Law of Conservation of Energy only while velocity will be hardly mentioned. Forces, being derivatives, will be given second level importance.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Students will find that the concepts of energy and momentum, which are conserved quantities, are invariably used while velocity and acceleration, even forces, being non-conserved quantities are rarely used. It makes sense, therefore to build up basis physics in these terms.
Emphasis will be placed on using these simplified methods to teach the basic concepts of physics. Everyday examples of the principles involved will be used frequently which can be used later by teachers in class room situations. A series of problems will be set at each lecture and these will be discussed as appropriate at subsequent lectures. Additional time will be set aside for those who wish to spend further time in finding the solutions to problems.
