Information
Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
Porous organic materials come in many different forms, encompassing nanoporous synthetic polymers with very high surface areas, cellulose-based filter papers for separation applications, macroporous emulsion-templated foams, and many more. The synthetic production routes of each material can differ vastly and hence present an excellent opportunity for the exploration of material science. The course will involve both the synthesis and characterization of porous organic materials, such as those listed above and more. Insoluble networks will be characterised using solid-state techniques, such as FTIR, XPS, TGA and nitrogen sorption isotherms. Prospective students may be tasked with testing the mechanical properties of foam materials the determination of membrane flux in cellulose/based filter papers. We hope to provide the basics skills to produce chemists capable of working in and contributing to the field of porous organic materials.
Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel
The performance of students in the laboratory will be continually assessed by their supervisor and after the praktikum is complete the student will produce a communication style article about their work for final assessment.
Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
3-4 weeks full time laboratory course. The practical performance in the lab will comprise 60% of the overall mark and the remaining 40% will be awarded upon the assessment of the final report. Continuous feedback will be provided on the report and students will have the chance to revise it before submission.
Prüfungsstoff
No exam required. Continuous assessment.
Literatur
Will be assigned upon the beginning of the lab course. Reading list will depend on the research topic chosen.
