Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The course provides an introductory survey of the dynamical processes that control the mean state of the tropical atmosphere and its variability under climate change. Topics to be covered are:

* Convection and the Large-Scale Environment
* Dynamics of the Hadley Cells
* Coupling of wind and rainfall
* Monsoons
* Theories of ITCZ variability
* Rainfall Changes in a warming world.

Instruction is at the MS and early PhD levels. Familiarity with basic concepts of thermodynamics and geophysical fluid dynamics is desirable. The course is light in derivations and introduces complex dynamical concepts. Students are required to attend morning lectures and afternoon discussions. Evaluation will be based on the afternoon data-analysis lab and a presentation on the last day of class.
