- Basin exploration, data collection, and IODP
- Data interpretation
- Subsidence analysis
- Basin reconstruction and modelling
This course has a goal to train students for gaining insights into evolution of sedimentary basins in a variety of tectonic and depositional settings. The first part of the course focus on mechanisms of basin formation and evolution in interplay of tectonics, sedimentation and depositional environment. The second part explores the structure, stratigraphy and sedimentology of sedimentary basins with introduction of associated data collection and deep-sea drilling (International Ocean Discovery Program; IODP). The third part provides various techniques and practices to train students for interpretations of outcrop, seismic reflection, and well data. Seismic reflection profiles and well-logging data are used to interpret different basin architectures. A part of the data (e.g., Vienna Basin) are selected to learn the quantification, reconstruction, and visualization of basin evolution during the fourth part of this course. The conventional and state of the art techniques are introduced and applied to the sedimentary record interpretation, subsidence analysis, and basin modelling.
