Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This course will present basic principles of microbial physiology, metabolism, stoichiometry, thermodynamics and kinetics applied to the selection, design and performance evaluation of engineered and intrinsic bioremediation systems

Topics Covered:
1. Fundamentals of Microbiology (bacterial physiology metabolism, energetics and genetics)
2. Biodegradation (requirements, structure-biodegradability trends, microbial interactions)
3. Xenobiotic Biotransformations (central pathways, aerobic and anaerobic mechanisms).
4. Biodegradation Kinetics (basic equations, determination of in situ degradation rates)
5. Stoichiometry (including thermodynamic model for biokinetic coefficients)
6. Monitored Natural Attenuation and Risk-Based Corrective Action (maybe phytoremediation)
7. Engineered Systems (applicability and limitations of various processes such as bioventing, air sparging, biobarriers, recirculation systems, bioaugmentation).
