Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Students will gain in-depth knowledge about processes and mechanisms that control the biogeochemical cycling of nutrients and pollutants in environmental systems. This will include a detailed understanding of microbial processes contributing to biogeochemical cycles (Geomicrobiology) from soil systems to extreme environments and how these processes could potentially contribute towards a more sustainable economy. Students will also learn about chemical processes in soil systems in controlling nutrient and pollutant geochemistry (Soil Chemistry). Students will apply this knowledge to tackle environmental problems (Environmental Consultancy Topics).

In general, this course will be delivered in a 'Flipped Classroom' style, with recorded lectures followed by in-class exercises including modeling, group work, discussions, short presentations ect.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

A maximum number of 100 points can be awarded to students participating in exams and in a consultant-style presentation and report.
Exams (total of 45 points): 3 exams are held electronically during the semester, each of which is worth 15 points. The exam dates are
1st exam: April 27th;
2nd exam: June 1st;
3rd exam June 13th;
Further details will be announced via Moodle.

Student group lectures (15%) on a topic of Geomicrobiology will have to be presented on April 25th

Consulting exercise:
Presentation (15 points): Students will work in groups to prepare and hold a presentation on a consulting exercise. Attendance is mandatory for all participants. Presentations will involve addressing a geochemical-based problem. Topics and more details will be available on moodle. The presentation date will be May 23rd.

Report (25 points): Students will work in groups to prepare a report that will consist of a consultant-style offer to solve a geochemical-based problem. Topics and more details will be available on moodle. The deadline for the reports will be June 22nd.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The grading of the course will be based on the total number of points awarded to each student in exams, the presentation and the final report. Up to 100 points can be awarded in total. In order to pass this course, at least 50% need to be gained.
