Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Students know the basics of soil formation, functions, and soil chemistry. They understand how soil and soil pore water properties influence the behavior and bio-availability of inorganic pollutants (FIAM and biotic ligand model). They are familiar with the characteristics of selected heavy metals (Hg, As, Pb, Cd) and can apply this knowledge to assess the behavior of other metals in soil. They know analytical methods to assess basic soil parameters and contamination of polluted sites. The students know the principal techniques for the remediation of soils contaminated with inorganic pollutants. The Students know the distribution, measurement, and analysis of the most important hydrogeological parameters, e.g. rainfall, discharge, and groundwater recharge. They know and can apply the equations for groundwater flow and transport in 3D space (Laplace, Poisson). They are familiar with analytical and numerical methods to solve flow and transport problems. They know how to process, analyze and interpret pumping test data and derive transmissivity and storage coefficients. They can build a simplified numerical 3D groundwater model and understand boundary conditions, numerical discretization, calibration, and validation of groundwater flow models and can solve easy flow problems themselves.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

The grading and examination of the courses is based on five individual evaluations, each worth 20 points. You can reach a total of 100 points. The contribution of each part to the final grade of the course is given in brackets. Examinations will not be repeated (PI).

1) Exercises 40 points (20 pts. for vadose zone and 20 pts. for hydrogeology exercises)
2) Three written exams, 60 points (20 pts. vadose zone, 08.05.2024, 20 pts. hydrogeology, 19.6.2024, 20 pts. groundwater modeling, 27.6.2024)

In-classroom teaching.

For the positive completion of the modeling course, since each course day's teaching and learning content is based on the previous one, 100% presence at the block course is mandatory. The modeling course takes place June 24 to June 27, full day. Plan accordingly.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

You can reach a total of 100 points = 100 %. Your grading will be by the following scheme:
> 87.5%=1
75- 87.49%=2
62.5- 74.99%=3
50- 62.49%=4
0- 49.99%=5 (failed, i.e., you need to repeat the whole course)

Prüfungsstoff

Written exam will be based on aspects related to lecture and exercise content. The modeling course includes practical modeling exercises during and at the end of the block course.

Literatur

Will be provided online as pdf during the course on Moodle.
