Information
Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
The course begins by describing in a qualitative manner the surface energy balance and the dynamics of atmospheric turbulence, together with their impact on the observed features of the surface layer (SL) and of the boundary layer (BL), i.e., the tropospheric layers nearest to the ground. The central topic of the course is the quantitative description of the properties of the SL and BL with scaling laws obtained from dimensional analysis. Finally, the representation of the SL and BL in numerical weather prediction and climate models is discussed. Every few weeks, a hands-on exercise (Python) based on the elaboration of actual measurements or on the implementation of simple theoretical models is proposed.
Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel
VO part (60%): Oral exam, 3 questions, approximately 45 minutes.
UE part (40%): Python scripts and/or notebooks submitted at the end of sessions.
UE part (40%): Python scripts and/or notebooks submitted at the end of sessions.
Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
Mininum requirement: Demonstrated understanding of processes in the atmospheric boundary layer and of micrometeorological phenomena.Oral exam: 3 questions, about 45 minutes. All topics explained during the course may be covered. You get a grade in
the range 0-60.Exercises: There are 4 exercise sessions in the semester, code must be submitted at the end of each session. For each session
you get a grade in the range 0-10. A list of tasks is given and the final grade is determined by the successfully
completed tasks.Final grade: The final percent grade (VO+UE) is converted as follows
* Range 91-100: 1
* Range 81-90: 2
* Range 71-80: 3
* Range 60-70: 4
