Information
Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
The course provides an introduction to climate modeling, with a focus on the global climate model ICON. You will run ICON yourself on a state-of-the-art HPC platform. You will be able to explain technical aspects of the ICON model, including the model grid, dynamical core and physics parametrizations. You will also have developed an understanding of climate modeling as a tool to build understanding. You will learn how to operate the ICON climate model. You will learn to evaluate and interpret the results to answer a scientific question that will be agreed upon during the course. Y will foster your skills of working in a team and in delivering high-quality scientific presentations.
Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel
The final grade will be calculated as follows:
40% written examen
10% active participation
50% project reportEach of the three components need to be completed. The partial performances are each graded from 0-100%. A weighted average is used to calculate the percentage achieved, from which the final grade is calculated according to the grading scheme. You can earn a bonus of 10 percentage points for your final grade by describing your modeling efforts and results in a social media post, youtube video, blog post or similar. Note: the post does not need to be published to obtain the bonus, but needs to be shared with the lecturer.
