Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

A comprehensive Master course on Star Formation and the Interstellar Medium (ISM). The goal of the course is to present a modern view of the exciting research for the origins of stars and planets from the diffuse gas in the ISM. The course will cover both observational and theoretical topics. Main topics:

The Discovery of the ISM
Galactic structure and general star formation
Cosmic rays
ISM observational tracers
ISM structure - observational
ISM structure - theoretical
Parker instability and cloud formation
Equilibrium solutions for self-gravitating clouds
Cloud contraction and collapse
Star formation in nearby clouds
Bubbles
Ambipolar diffusion
Circumstellar disks - theoretical
Circumstellar disks - observational
Jets and angular momentum problems
Magnetosphere and accretion

The course will take place on Mondays, from 9:45 to 13:00, including one hour of exercise.

See more information on the Moodle.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

The final grade will be based on the final exam together with the grade of the exercises. The grading system for the VU is:

70% Exam (27.1.2020)
30% Exercise (incl. attendance)

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
