Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Students learn the basics of GIS project management for the successful execution of a GIS solution across its complete life cycle. That is, from the initial idea/contact with a customer and sales over the conception and realization to the operation and update of a GIS solution. Theory is presented in lectures while students conduct a GIS project on their own in the exercises. GIS projects are set up in the area of GIS-based asset management.
The students’ projects complete the same steps (e.g. sales presentation, cost calculation, configuration tasks, project presentation) as discussed in lectures. In doing so, lectures and exercises cover the following topics:
1. ASSET MANAGEMENT
a. Basics
b. Business process support through GIS
2. SALES/CONSULTING
a. Sales/marketing concept
b. Consulting approaches; how to find the best suitable solution
c. Cost estimate for a GIS project
d. Business case calculation for a GIS project
e. Sales presentation
3. CONZEPTION/REALIZATION
a. Project management approaches, amongst others, waterfall model and agile
b. Rough and detailed concept vs. use cases and user stories
c. Best Practice in GIS projects: change management (waterfall projects), project balance (agile projects), customer engagement
d. Realization of a GIS project for asset management, e.g. property management, cemetery management, lightning inventory
e. GIS project presentation
4. OPERATION/UPDATE
a. Service Level Agreements
b. Managed Services
c. Life Cycle Management (e.g. new functionality, new data, data update, adjust business processes, …, take system out-of-operation)

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Participation in lectures and lab exercises inlcudes presentations, lab exercises, realization of a GIS project, written exam

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Grading is based on
- Participation in lectures and lab exercises 30%
- Lab exercises and GIS project 40%
- Written exam 30%
In total students must reach at least 51%.
