Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The seminar is a scientific discourse about (student-) selected topics approached via individual contributions through presentations/demos, discussions, and a brief written paper.

The seminar will focus on "Representation of Geographic Features" a topic at the intersection between cartography, geoinformatics, and the cognitive sciences. The seminar's goal is to develop a deeper understanding of the spectrum of contributions, methods, datasets, and application areas that relate to the computational representation of geographic features and especially their (feature) types, be them rivers, lakes, cities, storms, or individual buildings. Hence, a substantial part of the seminar will focus on theories of categorization and representation and the path from mental models to database records or symbols on a map.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

The assessment is done through two oral (group) presentations (and in-class activities), participation in discussions, and a brief written paper/report about a set of scientific papers/methods/datasets.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

For a passing grade, two group presentations, as well as a written scientific paper, are required. This includes designing a brief in-class activity. Additionally, the individual grade depends on the quality of the presentation and the active participation in discussions. Attendance is mandatory. One unit may be missed.

100 % - 90 % = 1
89 % - 80 % = 2
79 % - 70 % = 3
69 % - 60 % = 4
Below 60 % = 5

Prüfungsstoff

Oral presentations, written contributions, and active participation in discussions. Papers/materials will be made available via Moodle and students will have to sign up for groups during the *first* in-person session. Hence, while missing this first class is possible (and signing up via Moodle), it is highly recommended to join the first session.
