Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The course on Population Dynamics in Africa is expected to familiarize students with the population situations in Africa, the unique nature African fertility, mortality and marriage patterns and its effect on population growth and structure in the region and at global level. Students will learn how analyse and understand the dynamic situations of African population and relate the African realities with global development initiatives from socio-cultural, economic, political and ecological perspectives.

At the end of the course, the students should be able to critically discuss the nature and situations of African demography, and interpret existing policies, programs, research finding documents, graphs and data accurately and apply their academic knowledge to real world events.

Key issues of African fertility, morbidity, mortality, marriage and family formation systems and trends along with their specific data sources and problems associated with the African population data will be discussed jointly. In addition, the causes and determinants of African fertility, mortality and marriage patterns and structures will be reviewed and discussed. The course concludes by assessing the past, present and future situations of African population and the implications of Africa’s rapid population growth on the socio-economic development of the region and the global world.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

The teaching-learning methods used in this course includes joint analyses and discussions of relevant academic materials, review of scientific journal articles and book chapters, class presentations of review and research works, and writing of a term paper. Group works and discussions will also be used whenever possible.

The following will, however, be considered as mandatory to fulfil the requirements:
• Regular attendance and active participation during the sessions;
• Submission of assignments such as writings of short essays, analysing and interpreting data on the given topics;
• Class presentation of individual/group assignments (~10 min per student - the PPT format will be privileged); and
• Writing of a short term paper (~10 pages)

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Willingness to search, read, present and discuss issues dealing with African population data and its dynamics in English and the situation of population change in the Global South.

Prüfungsstoff

Class presentation (30%) and term paper (40%) will be marked individually. Group and individual assignments will also be assessed (30%). Assignments have to be passed individually. An assignment is passed with a minimum grade of 4.

Grading scheme:
100 - 86 % - grade 1
85 - 71 % - grade 2
70 - 56 % - grade 3
55 - 41 % - grade 4
40 - 0 % - grade 5

An additional grading scheme for presentation and term papers can be downloaded from the Moodle platform and will be explained at the beginning of the course.
