Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
The course on Migration and Development in Africa is expected to familiarize students with the mobility and spatial movements of African population, the unique nature African migrants, its causes and consequences, patterns and streams of African migration, as well as the impacts of migration on the development of Africa and the global world. Students will learn how to analyse and understand the dynamic features of African migration and relate the African migratory trends and patterns with global development initiatives from socio-cultural, economic, political/ideological and ecological perspectives. They will also conceptualize the current debate on migration and environmental impacts at global level.At the end of the course, the students should be able to critically discuss the nature and situations of African migration, and interpret existing policies, programs, research finding (i.e. documents, graphs and data) accurately and apply their academic knowledge to real world events.Key issues of African migration and spatial mobility, its causes and consequences, patterns and streams of African migration, the contribution/impacts of brain drain and remittance in Africa, the social, economic and political roles of African diaspora at global level, data sources and problems associated with the African migration data will be discussed. In addition, factors affecting African migration, its nature and structures will be reviewed and discussed. The course concludes by assessing the past, present and future situations of African migration and its implications on the socio-economic development of the region and the globe at large.
Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel
The teaching-learning methods used in this course includes joint analyses and discussions of relevant academic materials, review of scientific journal articles and book chapters, class presentations of review and research works, and writing of a term paper. Group works and discussions will also be used whenever possible.The following will, however, be considered as mandatory to fulfil the requirements:
• Regular attendance and active participation during the sessions;
• Submission of assignments such as writings of short essays, analysing and interpreting data on the given topics;
• Class presentation of individual/group assignments (~10 min per student - the PPT format will be privileged); and
• Writing of a short term paper (~10 pages)

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
Willingness to search, read, present and discuss issues dealing with African migration (i.e. reports and data) and its dynamics in English and the situation of population movement between the South and North.
Prüfungsstoff
Class presentation (30%) and term paper (40%) will be marked individually. Group and individual assignments will also be assessed (30%). Assignments have to be passed individually. An assignment is passed with a minimum grade of 4.Grading scheme:
100 - 86 % - grade 1
85 - 71 % - grade 2
70 - 56 % - grade 3
55 - 41 % - grade 4
