290227 EX Fachexkursion: CROATIA - SENSE OF PLACE: Vienna out of Vienna" (2025S)

Description: Habsburg empire has ruled over large parts of Europe for centuries, spreading their language, architecture, and other cultural influences throughout the empire. The influenced territories are now parts of several different countries, each proud of their distinct culture and heritage. However, many similarities to Vienna remain due to the shared history and cultural heritage. We are going to visit three cities in Croatia, namely Zagreb, Rijeka and Opatija, to deeper investigate the topic of humans **sense of places** with a particular focus on computational representation of places. We will think, in terms of human perception, what makes these places similar and what makes them different from Vienna and each other and how this is reflected in geographic data and geovisualization. The trip will include field exercises such as place exploration and sketch-mapping, a guest lecture and visits to interesting sites and museums.

Accommodation will be in hotels across the visited cities.
Transportation will be mainly by public transport (i.e., bus transport between cities and local public transport within cities).
