Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

In this course field trips to Budapest will be undertaken. During these field trips lectures will be presented to introduce in the current urban development problems of post socialist cities. Smaller empirical projects organized by the students themselves and in collaboration with students of the visited cities are foreseen.
The course comprises:
- Academic lectures related to the main theoretical background,
- Expert introductions of urban development and issues to prepare guided scientific
trips,
- Discussions with invited urban experts, academics, and planners, and
representatives of municipalities,
- Guided scientific trips to present the past, and mostly the present practice and
products of the most important urban development and changes in Budapest, and in
its agglomeration and Székesfehérvár.
The contents of this module primarily focus on following issues:
- Main tendencies of urban development in Hungary
- Changes in the spatial-social structures of Hungarian urban areas (especially in
Budapest)
- Modern urban issues and main characteristics of the planning process in Budapest:
- historical city centre, rehabilitation areas and new residential areas
- Development of the Budapest agglomeration area
- Large housing estates, suburban villages
- Urban, social consequences of the present planning processes
- Globalization and urban development in Budapest and Székesfehérvár:
- The model of Székesfehérvár and its region
