Information
Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
The aim of the seminar is to train and improve critical reading skills and discussion of scientific literature. Each session will involve an interactive discussion of a published scientific paper on animal cognition and behaviour (e.g. identifying strengths or weaknesses in the study design and the paper in general, critically evaluating the results, as well as authors' claims and interpretations, and proposing suggestions for improvement of the study or paper). Each student will have the opportunity to select a paper to be discussed by the class in one of the sessions and also to give a short powerpoint presentation summarising that paper at the beginning of the session. This seminar shall prepare students at the master and PhD level for publicly presenting their studies and for participating at conferences. A special focus is on formulating arguments and structuring different forms of discussions (open floor, attacker-defender etc.).
