Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

The course is practical and focuses on tools and procedures for virtual image manipulation of 3D image data sets. In particular, 3D (CT) image data sets - mainly didactic data sets from human anatomical parts like skulls or teeth, will be provided to the participants. The participants will learn how to handle, manipulate and segment 3D images by means of Amira 5.6 (Mercury Computer Systems, Chelmsford, MA). (segmentation is a procedure for the identification and isolation of the various materials represented in the image volume data). The students will learn also other techniques for image data manipulation, such as cropping, flipping, translating, reorienting, producing a surface, fitting a cutting plane, setting landmarks, creating curves. An introduction on some features of the EVAN toolbox (i.e., landmark collection, sliding curve and surface semilandmarks; http://evan-society.org) will be given. Language of instruction: English

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Attendance: attendance of the course is compulsory. Absences are allowed up to 80% of the total number of hours.Homework exercises: participants are asked to complete works left unfinished during the class time and are invited to practice in the computer room after the class hoursPractical test: At the end of the course participants must successfully carry out a practical test for completing the course (see section Prüfungsstoff - Englisch). One lesson (usually the one preceding the date of the exam) will be devoted to specifically practice tools and procedures necessary to successfully pass the exam.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Since this is a basic course, no previous knowledge on image data manipulation is required.Participants are asked to have a capable hard disk to work on, in order to overcome the limitations of the departmental computer facilities.

Prüfungsstoff

The participant will be asked to work on a given 3D image data set and to apply tools and procedures as practiced during the course. The files produced should be handed in for evaluation. The performance of the student will be evaluated and assessed in terms of completeness, correctness and accuracy of the performance. The exam is based entirely on the content of the course and is exclusively practical.
