Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

In this field course our study objects range from oligotrophic and dystrophic pre-alpine lakes over ponds and pit mosses to running waters and groundwater bodies (Base: watercluster Lunz). In case that overnight stays should be forbidden due to enforced corona measures, we will perform day excursions from Vienna , ranging from impoundments and Danubean backwaters over ponds and pit mosses to running waters in the Wienerwald area. Introductory lectures provided as pdfs on moodle and short introductions in the field give insight into geology, landscape ecology, abiotic and biotic interactions, measuring and sampling techniques as well as identification of algae, macrophytes, aquatic invertebrates and fish, using identification tables specifically composed for this course. In the lab, samples are analysed and identified and field data (e.g. underwater light data, limnochemical and hydraulic data) processed and discussed.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Attendance control, group presentations at the end of each module, written exam in October.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

The participants are aware of the most important ecological principles acting in aquatic habitats. Students are able to sample aquatic biota and to acquire physical and chemical field data. Students are trained in using relevant identification keys for aquatic biota and are able to use their bioindication potential. They are also able to compose protocols of their teamwork results.

Prüfungsstoff

Introductory lectures, guided field work (equipment training, data collection) at a multitude of aquatic habitat types in Lower Austria and guided data analyses in the lab. Handouts are distributed at the start of the course.
