Information

Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Students will learn methods for image analysis using ImageJ, Amira, or other software as needed; carry out projects using x-ray microtomographic (microCT) or other 3D images of biological samples; and write a research report in the format of a scientific paper. Students may bring their own projects or work on an assigned project. Techniques can include applications of image processing and analysis software to 2D and 3D images, 3D image reconstruction and visualisation, and image measurement and analysis. Projects can be on organismal morphology (comparative, developmental, evolutionary), functional or structural analysis/modeling, image computing or informatics, or other topics according to student interests.
This course time is not blocked, so the project work can be carried out according each student's own schedule.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Based on participation (30%), project content and presentation (30%), and final report (40%).

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Students will carry out a small research project and present their results, while learning techniques and applications of 3D microscopic imaging.

Prüfungsstoff

In-class discussions, independent reading, and small-group work with instructors.

Literatur

Literature specific to each project will be chosen by the instructors and students during development of the projects.
