Information
Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
This practical course has two parts, a faunistic part and an experimental developmental biology part. Part1: students will examine samples of plancton and corralligene and determine larvae and marine species. Part 2: Using species available at the station (cnidarians, polychaetes, sea urchins, urochordates), development will be studied and manipulated. This part is accompanied by specialised instructors from the station and from other instititutes. Teaching is in English (and partly in German), since most instructors are not german speaking. As prerequisite, the student must have the "Baupläne1 and 2" and the "VO Einführung in die Entwicklung der Tiere" or the VO "Molecular principles of development". The course is restricted to about 12-14 students, depending on the availability of rooms in the station.
Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel
The student will give a seminar presentation about a selected topic and continue to do research in Vienna. The student will write up a report that fulfills the requirements of a Bachelor thesis.
Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
The student should learn to assess and distinguish the diversity of the marine organisms found in the plancton and benthic samples. They should get an understanding of the development of some marine model species and do experiments investigating the regulation of developmental processes and of body plans.
