Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Advanced topics in molecular population genetics. The course will have a short introductory segment, consisting of 2-3 sessions, including lectures and worked examples. The remainder of the course will consist of coverage of 5 advanced topics in molecular population genetics, with each topic spanning 2-3 weeks. Each topic will be covered by a different instructor, who will briefly introduce the topic, and assign papers for discussion at the next meeting. Students will be required to write short essays, reading and to take turns leading the discussion.

Prerequisites: An introductory course in evolutionary genetics. May be any of:
Introduction to Population Genetics, Uni Wien
Modeling in Evolutionary Biology, Biology, Uni Wien
Mathematical population genetics, Mathematics, Uni Wien
Principles of Evolution, IST Austria
Basic course for PhD students (Population Genetics Introductory course), Vetmeduni Vienna

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Compulsory attendance; the evaluation consists of different performances: quality and completeness of the seminar presentation, active participation in the scientific discussion of the presented publications, written records (the percentage of the subgrades will be announced by the course leader); each of the subgrades must have a positive evaluation.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Understanding the process of molecular evolution, through critical reading of key papers.

Prüfungsstoff

Completion of the module assignments.
