300644 UE Analyses of LTR retroelements in plant genomes (2008W)

The practical course introduces the methods of amplification, cloning, sequencing and sequence analyses of a highly variable and repetitive DNA type, namely LTR retroelements, which constitute a large portion of plant genomes. The students learn to perform degenerate PCR amplification, cloning, plasmid DNA isolation (Mini Prep), DNA sequencing, and to analyze the obtained data (alignment on DNA and amino acid level). The students will acquire practical skills in handling the DNA and performing DNA cloning, and they will learn to analyze and interpret the sequence data in an evolutionary context.
