The course aims at providing basic information about bacterial genetics and how it can be used for industrial and medical applications. The following topic will be covered:
- Bacterial cells and chromosomes
- DNA replication
- Transcription
- Protein synthesis
- Bacterial genes
- Exchange of genetic information in bacteria
- Genetic analysis
- Basic techniques used to identify, amplify, and clone genes
- Construction and screening of DNA libraries
- Site-specific mutagenesis using PCR
- Molecular Analysis of DNA, RNA, and proteins
- Molecular analysis of genes and genomes
- Bioinformatics: basic tools
- Gene expression in bacteria and its control
- The lactose operon in Escherichia coli: induction and catabolite repression
- The tryptophan operon in Escherichia coli: repression and attenuation
- Metabolic engineering principles
- Synthetic Biology principles
- Novel DNA assembly technologies
- Synthetic regulatory circuits in bacteria and their applications
