At the beginning of this course you will learn general concepts related to environmental conservation such as the sustainability development goals, circular economy and life cycle assessment of products and services. We will also define how we can measure the environmental impact in different ways and you will be suggested some reading related to environmental conservation. Then, we will focus on the impact of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) by screening some case studies published mainly as scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals, but also news appearing in other types of journals, magazines and video documentary. For instance, we will see how anti-inflammatory drugs or antibiotics can affect the flora and fauna once released in the environment. Finally, we will briefly focus on mitigation strategies to reduce the effect of PPCPs and chemicals in the environment by talking about waste and water treatment, sustainable alternatives and sustainable production.
Intended learning outcomes – course objectives:
• You will develop an analytical point of view on the subject of sustainability in the pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) market.
• You will gain basic knowledge on key concepts and tools related to sustainability, applicable also in the pharmaceutical sector. These will cover general concepts such as Sustainable Development Goals, Life cycle assessment, Carbon footprint and how they are related to the pharmaceutical industry.
• You will gain general knowledge related to environmental protection by getting accustomed to the concept of life cycle of a drug into the environment and some mitigation strategies to reduce the concentration of chemicals in the environment.
• You will identify and discuss the impact of the pharmaceutical and personal care product (PPCPs) and possible sustainability strategies of pharmaceutical industries by looking at some case studies.
• You will prepare a presentation on a topic of your choice (related to the course) and present it to the class to start a conversation.Methodology - lecture type:
In presence (In case of COVID restrictions: online via Collaborate with, link available via Moodle)
All the Lecture slides are available on Moodle.
Links to extra reading are offered on the slides at the end of each lecture. Such readings are not compulsory but can be part of an open discussion for the following lecture.
To prepare for the assessment you need to attend the lectures (to do the mid-term multiple choice questionnaire) and make your own research by searching for scientific articles, industry reports, patents or interesting magazine articles (for the preparation of the individual/group presentation).
One guest is planned to give a presentation from the Fairtrade Österreich talking about Fairtrade cocoa butter and its implications in cosmetics use.
