Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Course objectives:
- Improvement of skills needed to interpret and produce grammatically correct texts in standard English;
- Raising awareness of the nuances involved in making grammatical choices;
- Increasing students' appreciation of the syntax-semantics interface;
Content:
Student-centered approach: Students determine the issues to be discussed in class in a survey at the course start.
Possible topics: Tense/Aspect, Mood, Voice, Conditionals, Inversion, Word formation, Modals, Catenative Verbs, Reported Speech, Relative Clauses, Determiners, Adjectives vs. Adverbs;
Methods:
Discussion in plenum, pair work, group work. Inverted classroom model.
The language of instruction is English.

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Four tests (90% of the final grade)
Active participation in class (10% of the final grade)
Mid-semester test (30%), end-of-term test (30%), two mini tests (15% each). No additional materials/electronic devices permitted.
Grading:
90 - 100% 1
80 - 89% 2
70 - 79% 3
60 - 69% 4
0 - 59% 5 (fail)
