Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

Content:
Analysis, discussion, production and transformation of various authentic text types/genres embedded in specific communication situations

Objectives:
The objectives of this course are as follows:
- to improve students’ text analysis skills with special attention to text types/genres and their textual/linguistic characteristics and conventions;
- to enhance students’ ability to plan and produce effective and authentic texts for different communicative purposes, situations and target audiences;
- to raise students’ awareness of the writing process as well as text features and patterns;

Methods:
Lectures, in-class discussions and interactive activities; writing tasks and home assignments based on specific instructions (e.g. producing original written texts of various types, rewriting/adapting and paraphrasing texts to suit different communicative purposes and target groups); individual, pair, and group work

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Assessment will be based on the following:

- Completion of written assignments (20%)
- Mid-term test (40%)
- Final test (40%)

Each student will be allowed to use one monolingual dictionary during the tests (no electronic devices).

The course is accompanied by a tutorial which students are expected to attend.

Grading scale:

90-100%: 1
80-89%: 2
70-79%: 3
60-69%: 4
< 60%: 5 (fail)

Prüfungsstoff

Both tests will be based on the text types and exercise formats used in class and in the written assignments.
