Information
Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
This course deals with various topics relating to culture and communication in the English speaking world. The course aims at providing relevant knowledge in the respective contexts and encouraging students to deal independently with related issues. (The special focus of this course will be on historical and recent immigration and immigrants in the U.S.)
Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel
Regular attendance and active participation in class are mandatory. Grades will be based on seminar paper (70%), written assignments (15%), and oral assignments (15%). An advanced level of English is required (oral and written).
Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
The aim of the course is to promote culture-specific knowledge as well as awareness for the complex relations between culture and communication. This process will be stimulated by students' independent work on historical, cultural and social questions relating to the topic of the course. The following skills will be strengthened: speeking freely on a topic, formulating personal views, writing coherent texts.
Prüfungsstoff
The course will be held in English. Students will develop their own areas of interest within the topic of the course. They will be provided with a reading list, but will also do their own research. Understanding of the topic will be deepened through individual and group work, presentations and discussions. Academic writing will be practiced through exercises and the production of a seminar paper (Proseminararbeit).
