Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung
Exploration of English as a global lingua franca in various fields such as business, science and diplomacy: historical development; varieties; the role of economic and political power; global culture and cultural identity; the pros and cons of having a global language; possible difficulties in lingua franca communication (misunderstandings, misconceptions, superiority, etc.).
Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel
Written end-of-semester exam.
Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab
To introduce students to important concepts regarding English as a global language; to raise students' awareness of the importance of being able to apply English as a lingua franca; to accustom students to listening to theoretical concepts and practical examples in English; to highlight special issues that might arise when using English as a lingua franca.
Prüfungsstoff
Lecture and presentation of contents; real-life examples (listening and reading examples, such as dialogues, situations, etc.); discussion of contents and examples. Language of instruction: English.
