Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehrveranstaltung

This lecture focuses on skills for writing academic publications with a particular focus on formats, platforms, and conventions in computational linguistics. It aims to heighten students sense for the correct formal linguistic register in transcultural scientific contexts as well as skills needed to write a formal master's thesis.

Contents:
- Systematic research and reception of scientific works
- Correct citation
- Language register: formal vs. informal; consideration of the transcultural dimension
- Academic terminology and phrasing
- Structure of a paragraph
- Structure of a scientific work/thesis
- Information design in the sense of how to present scientific methods, results, and data
- description of statistical and qualitative data

Method:
- Writing exercises with evaluation in form of peer reviewing
- Oral presentations on how to structure and present research method and data
- In-class interactive exercises in groups and individually
- Final term paper

Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel

Submission of all specified writing, research and peer reviewing exercises as well as the final term paper on a topic to be coordinated with the instructor.

Mindestanforderungen und Beurteilungsmaßstab

Completion of all specified writing, research and peer reviewing exercises, submission of final seminar paper of an appropriate quality, and compliance with attendance requirements.

Prüfungsstoff

On site exercises, online exercises, on site presentation
Term paper of corresponding quality incorporating contents and requirements to academic writing discussed during the semester
